A crack in the mountain

A crack in the mountain

2 December 2021 to 28 February 2022

Artists¿ Studios, T1 and Black Box

This exhibition presents the results of the 5th Research and Production Programme at the C3A. This programme has been one of the cornerstones of the centre's activity since it was founded, with the aim of becoming Andalusia's leading institution in this field. Indeed, one of the distinguishing traits of the C3A is its commitment to showing the public the creative process and its outcome, not just finished works.

The title, A Craft in the Mountain, refers to art's ability to invade, penetrate, coexist with and transform the seemingly solid bulk of this cultural venue. Pieces produced in the C3A studios are shown there, but some emerge from that space, travelling and extending to other areas of the building like a crack or rift snaking across this grey mountain. The exhibition features a wide variety of techniques and media, from drawing and sculpture to installation, textiles, pottery, video art and sound art. In addition, some of the pieces were created specifically for the spaces where they are displayed.

Jose María Delgado (Seville, 1990), after working with samplings or field recordings, has developed a piece called cerca (close), in which he approaches minimal music through sound atmospheres devised using reverberation and low frequencies. Fuentesal Arenillas (Huelva, 1986 / Seville, 1989) created the installation La mesa es el suelo de las manos (The Table is the Floor of the Hands) in which they explore the concept of the "table", an element that redefines the space where it is placed, making it more liveable and human. Irene Infantes (Seville, 1989) explores the textile forms of Córdoba's caliphate period and brings them into the contemporary era with two pieces produced for this show. In Ombligo, cuenco y agua (Navel, Bowl and Water), Julia Llerena (Seville, 1985) takes us on a geographical, tactile and sensory journey by highlighting the similarities between skin and clay. Lois Patiño (Vigo, 1983) presents the video Somos los de los asnos (We're the Donkey People), a piece inspired by her collaboration with flamenco artist Niño de Elche for his album La exclusión, which reflects on exclusion in contemporary Europe. Consuegra Romero (Pozoblanco, Córdoba, 1982) explores dreamscapes with unanswered truths in a series of drawings made with pen and/or felt-tip pen. Fernando M. Romero (Córdoba, 1978) challenges the ways in which we "read" an object, looking between the lines and probing the intersections of word, image, object and sound. Finally, Cachito Vallés (Seville, 1986) presents Azimuth, an installation based on this astronomical concept which measures a body's position in relation to the horizon line, where pieces hanging in mid-air invite us to take a closer look at the universe.
