I Was Stone and Lost My Centre

I Was Stone and Lost My Centre

From 19 July to 23 October 2022

Location: Artists¿ studios. Curator: Joaquín Jesús Sánchez

This exhibition presents the results of the 6th Research and Production Programme at the C3A. The programme has been one of the cornerstones of the centre's activity since it was founded, with the aim of becoming Andalusia's leading institution in this field.

The title is taken from a soleá by La Serneta, a legendary flamenco singer in Jerez in the early 20th century. The lyrics say, "I was stone and lost my centre, and they tossed me into the sea. Ages later I returned, my lost centre to seek". The words allude to the ancient custom of tossing defective millstones into water channels, where they would be eroded and disintegrate in the flowing stream. The various projects carried out during this residency are united by their interest in how identity (childhood, ancestry, vernacular imagery) negotiates with the generic and the universal. This is apparent in the narrative aspect of the works as well as in the choice of materials.

Andrés García Vidal (Seville, 1991) is an artist who works with sound studies and oral/aural culture. He explores forms of intrusion and affect in specific contexts by means of noise, improvisation and participatory processes. With a BFA from the University of Seville (2014) and an MA in Fine Art and Design from the Sandberg Instituut, Amsterdam (2018), García Vidal currently lives and works in the Netherlands and Andalusia.

Christian Lagata (Jerez de la Frontera, Cádiz, 1986) is a visual artist who lives and works in Madrid. His practice is based on a sculptural way of understanding and constructing installations with an urban, industrial aesthetic, where materials play a predominant role, situating spectators amid those ruins which are also part of cities.

Julia Martos (Córdoba, 1989) is a visual artist and programmer who currently lives and works in Bilbao and Córdoba. Since earning her first master's degree in Art Production (2013), she has been researching the politics of the archive and its exhibition in both the white cube and the black box. She completed her MA in Film Programming and Curating at Birkbeck University, Leeds, in 2021. Her thesis, titled "The Hand Behind: A Contemporary Awakening of Women from the Spanish Family Archive", illustrates her interest in tracing a feminist counter-history through appropriative filmic practices.

Violeta Mayoral (Almería, 1988) is an artist based in Barcelona whose practice encompasses different languages and media, from the visual to the aural, and is accompanied by questions about the semiotic nature of experience. She uses happening and listening as methodology, and her research attempts to understand the regimens of meaning through the paradigm of vision and sonic experience, examining phenomena such as relation, inference, contingency or intuition. Mayoral studied Communications at the University of Barcelona with a minor in Semiotics at the UNAM (Mexico City) thanks to the Banco Santander Ibero-American Scholarship.
