The Centro de Creación Contemporánea de Andalucía is pleased to present a solo performance by Okkyung Lee (Daejeon, South Korea, 1975). This cellist, composer and improviser moves freely between different artistic disciplines and possibilities. Since the year 2000, she has worked as a solo artist and collaborated with creators in a wide range of disciplines and contexts. Lee has taken a broad array of inspirations ¿including noise, improvisation, jazz, western classical and the traditional and popular music of her homeland¿ and used them to forge a highly distinctive musical opus. Her curiosity and determined spirit of exploration guide the work she has done in different areas.

Although Okkyung is probably best known for her improvisational work utilizing visceral extended techniques over the last two decades, she started out developing site-specific works that respond to the surrounding architecture, audience or objects, producing immersive experiences that challenge the ingrained hierarchy of traditional concert settings.

She currently leads the Yeo-Neun Quartet, an ensemble known for its delicate, richly nuanced performances, in which she is accompanied by harpist Maeve Gilchrist, pianist Jacob Sacks and bassist Eivynd Opsvik. With them, Lee explores the lyrical side of her compositional facet while continuing her solo work.

She received a dual bachelor¿s degree in Contemporary Writing & Production and Film Scoring from the Berklee College of Music in 1998 and a master's degree in Contemporary Improvisation from the New England Conservatory of Music in 2000.

She has been commissioned to compose music and assemble projects for the Time Spans Festival (New York), Groupe de Recherches Musicales (Paris) and the Sonic Acts Festival (Amsterdam), among others. She has also performed at the Museum of Modern Art, Whitney Museum of American Art and The Met Breuer (New York), Museum Tinguely (Basel), Museo del Novecento (Milan), Serpentine Galleries and White Cube Galleries (London), and many other venues.

Lee received a Foundation for Contemporary Arts Grant in 2010 and a Doris Duke Performing Artist Award in 2015. In addition, she has been awarded residencies at Civitella Ranieri in Umbria, Italy (2015) and Akademie Schloss Solitude in Stuttgart, Germany (2017).
