José Iges. Self-portraits

The C3A is pleased to present the solo exhibition Autorretratos [Self-portraits] by José Iges (b. Madrid, 1951). A leading figure in the world of sound art, who has also distinguished himself as curator and communicator, Iges here shares a number of works he made alone in the past two decades, "The guiding thread," he says, "is the more or less autobiographical nature of all the works assembled in this project. Secondly, this nature is underlined at times by the deployment of old objects with their own biographies -it's the opposite of the ready-made since we are not seeing merely mass-produced items, but objects made personal by use. The most extreme case is found in El retorno de Ulises [The return of Ulysses]: an old suitcase "customised" with tin badges and map fragments, from which we can hear works from the Dedicatorias [Dedications] series referring to travel and the auditory landscape. And also the old portrait stands bearing "selfies" in the new Fondo Ilusorio de Espejos installation [Illusory backdrop of mirrors]. The exhibition features video actions, prints, publications, and musical scores printed on mirrors, the guiding thread being the creation of sounds.
