MAIDER LÓPEZ. BEHIND

Maider López's Detrás (Behind), 2019, is the fourth site-specific work to be commissioned by the C3A for its media wall. The piece is to be projected from late 2019 until late 2020, from dusk until midnight. The best spot to view it from is the riverbank across from the building.

Using a play of lights the artist transforms the brutalist architecture of the C3A into a more liquid architecture. This translucent glaze effect allows the viewer to glimpse an imaginary horizon that might be seen if the building weren't there, and which merges with the actual cityscape. Thus the museum seems to disappear to become a transparent screen representing an extension of surroundings.

From the roof of the building the artist recorded the blinking on and off of street lamps and building lights which she accelerated for the projection onto the wall,  subtly denoting the nocturnal rhythm of the city. The artist says her intention with this installation is to "lend continuity to Cordoba's night-time landscape".The work addresses the nature of totemic and omnipresent public art, on this occasion taking refuge in a strategy of disappearance by erasing the building virtually.

Maider López' works have been shown in Spain and abroad: Prospect 4, Contemporary Art Triennial, New Orleans (2017); 1645 Tizas, Matadero Madrid (2016); Desplazamiento, Koldo Mitxelena, Donostia-San Sebastián and MARCO, Vigo (2015), Play Time, 4ème Biennale d'Art Contemporain, Rennes (2014); Mom, Am I Barbarian? 13th Istanbul Biennial (2013); Mountain, Lower Austria Contemporary (2013), Polder Cup, Skor and Witte de With, Amsterdam (2010), Éclats, Centre Pompidou-Metz (2010), Sharjah Biennial 9, UAR (2009); Line of Sight, Zendai MOMA Museum, Shanghai (2008); SCAPE Christchurch Biennial of Art in Public Space, New Zealand (2008); AdosAdos, Guggenheim Bilbao (2007); Columnes, Caixa Forum, Barcelona (2006) and the 51st annual Venice Biennale (2005).

Maider López works with public space and architecture. Her interventions shatter the static nature of things and places, opening a territory of negation, and leading to new ways of looking and relating. Urban spaces and natural landscapes are dislocated by means of strategies that change habits and relations, generating new spaces and situations. Her projects off us the possibility of rethinking places by breaking the normal dynamics of the use and perception of space.
